GROUNDWATER MANAGEMENT PERSPECTIVES FOR BORNO AND YOBE STATES, NIGERIA
M. Z. Bunu

ABSTRACT
The Lake Chad Basin is one of the largest inland drainage basins in
Africa. The Borno and Yobe States of Nigeria are located within the basin
and cover an area of about 116,000 km2. Groundwater is the predominant
source of water supply and over 2,000 boreholes are found in the area.
High rates of abstraction and a lack of adequate recharge have caused drastic
declines in groundwater levels and operational difficulties. Proper management
strategies are required. This paper examines the problems caused by over
abstraction of groundwater and suggests management strategies aimed at
improving the situation.
